OCD and Beckham
Even among the growing number of celebrities that have publicly announced that suffer from OCD, Beckham is a huge name.
Soccer superstar, international celebrity, husband to former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham, – David Beckham with his Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is yet another prolific achiever that shows the heights to which people with the condition can soar. In his case, it came to light publicly when he talked about the personality traits in a number of interviews.
Symptoms
- Spending hours perfectly aligning furniture in his house & straightening magazines and books precisely.
- Buying products like groceries and clothes in even-numbered multiples so that they can be organized evenly, and disliking groups of objects in odd numbers generally.
- Counting and quantifying groups of objects obsessively, such as cans of cola in the fridge or tiles on the floor
As a role model to millions of aspiring sports stars across the world, and given that David Beckham has admitted to OCD, we can only hope this continues to change public awareness this condition for the better. It certainly hasn’t stopped Beckham becoming one of the most prolific sportsmen of his era, one of the most recognizable celebrities in the world – not just in his native homeland, England.
David Beckham and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
Among his other symptoms David Beckham says obsessive compulsive disorder leads him to carefully organize his objects like magazines and clothing in ordered symmetrical patterns.
As like many other people who suffer from it, David Beckham says OCD can make him difficult to be around. He has also said this need to count objects and straighten them is a long-term trait, one he is unable to ignore. Interestingly, Beckham also stated he believed one of the reasons he keeps getting more tattoos is related to his Obsessive Compulsive Disorder as well.
On the field, during his reign as captain of Manchester United and the English national squad, he proved a formidable force. Countless young players admired his amazing ability to be able to bend the flight path of the soccer ball in ways that made it nearly impossible for the goal keeper to stop. As a world celebrity, Beckham going public with his OCD ought to go a long way in reducing the stigma and confusion associated with it, and mental health issues in general.
